Feature: The Straight Thread

Today we're going to Madison, Wisconsin!

I had the pleasure of visiting The Straight Thread and meeting owner Matthew Nafranowicz back in 2008 while I was writing for the Eastside News.  I wrote to him the other day and all seemed quite well.   :)

Matthew's daughter, Mira, helping out.   :)

This is the article I wrote about his wonderful shop:

If your furniture has seen better days, it may be time to head over to The Straight Thread located at 2033 Atwood Avenue. This upholstery shop has been in business since 2002 and part of the Atwood Community since September 2007.

The Straight Thread will recover just about anything with fabric. The shop specializes in re-upholstery and restoration of furniture, wall upholstery, and custom built pieces.  Fabrics are offered in an assortment of prices and styles, and environmentally friendly padding options can also be requested.

Owner Matthew Nafranowicz may have initially picked up upholstery as a side job, but he has made it into a rewarding career. His extensive training sets The Straight Thread apart from other upholstery shops. He has worked with high-end furniture in both New York City and Paris. While in France, he learned traditional upholstery techniques that can be traced back to the 17th century. These techniques make upholstered pieces last much longer than modern methods and give pieces a wonderful hand-stitched detail.  Matthew actively tries to keep traditional craft alive, because “it’s a lost art in the States,” he says.

For all your upholstery needs and desires, visit Matthew at The Straight Thread. The shop is open Monday thru Thursday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and on Friday from 10 am to 5pm. Appointments are also accepted on Saturdays.

Matthew's shop really is wonderful.  He has so many samples to choose from.  Truly a talented man.
